Dire Dawa University served as host for the visiting students and academic staff of University of Cincinnati on December 9-14, 2015.
This is UC’s 3rd visit to DDU, in an effort to strengthen the linkage between partner institutions. UC group, headed by Professor Gregory Beaucage, is mostly comprised of chemical, mechanical and architecture students and academic staffs.
The team aimed at building lanterns powered by mini solar panels with LED lights inside a recycled bottle filled with chlorinated water. The lanterns were built and assembled together with DDIT students from various field of studies.
The workshop created a collaborative environment between the local and the American students. The Scientific Director of DDIT, Mr.Getnet states “The workshop did not only expose the students to practical applications of technology, but also established cultural relations”.
After the assembly of the lantern posts, the units were brought to a nearby village, Lega Oda. The community leader requested that the lanterns be installed in the community center with the school and clinic.
